An illustration of Isaiah 6 for the Old and New Project, a biblical illustration initiative by Jim LePage and Troy Deshano.

I’ve been an atheist since childhood, so I was at first bewildered when they asked me to participate – but in exploring their site, I learned that the project welcomes and in fact encourages artists from all spiritual perspectives, including people like me who are are about as spiritual as a bag of hammers.

I’ve been perennially fascinated by the products of Christianity – the crazy saints, the obsessive work of Hieronymous Bosch, Bernini’s St. Teresa, Dante’s Divine Comedy, William Blake’s illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy, weird icons, everything discussed in The Name of the Rose, odd relics, strange rituals, the cathedrals… etc.

This particular moment from Isaiah has been illustrated by tons of people, but I was really smitten with this amazing naive drawing by Benjamin Roden, who founded the Branch Davidian Seventh-day Adventist Association (?). I learned a lot researching this project, and if you like the piece you can buy a print – proceeds go to charity.

I participated in Hourly Comic Day on February 1st, and inexplicably I have only just now finished my comics. I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle

Many other folks did a much better job with theirs, viz: Eleanor Davis, Vera Brosgol, Emily Partridge, Jen Wang, Chuck Groenink, Brandon B, Angie Wang, John Martz, Kat Verhoeven, Emily Carroll, Rebecca Tobin, and (the winner) Kris Mukai.

If you want to see the same day told from the perspective of some of the people in this comic, see the hourlies of Roman Muradov, Jennifer Hom, Betsy Bauer, and Mark Ivey.

Next year I’m just going to lie in a dark room and draw black squares all day.

The City of Lost Children for the Silver Screen Society – a dystopian fantasy/sci-fi adventure/romance/tragicomedy starring Ron Perlman, Judith Vittet, and Dominique Pinon (who plays 7 different characters!). Jeunet and Caro, the directors, had previously made one of my favorite films of all time, Delicatessen – I worked in a small reference to it.

Yes! I do get that a lot. He’s one of my favorite cartoonists. Some other artists who have had an embarassingly obvious effect on me: Joost Swarte, Hergé, de Chirico, Moebius, Eleanor Davis, Henry McCausland, Jillian Tamaki, Sammy Harkham, Eyvind Earle.

Thanks! I work mostly digitally on a Wacom Cintiq. I scan sketches from my sketchbook, assemble them in Photoshop, draw a ton of guide lines for perspective, ink everything digitally, color, add some scanned-in ink/graphite texture, and tweak colors forever. I used to do lots of watercolor and printmaking (woodcut and silkscreen) but haven’t had the time lately.

Hi Jesse, you must have asked me this literally almost a year ago. I am sorry. :C

The ones I have left are all misregistered, but I’m probably going to do 2-3 more images in this series for TCAF this year, and they’ll be better than the ones I did last year, so I will set some aside for you!

I wish I could. I think it would be an interesting challenge. At the moment, I don’t have the time to do personal commissions. I occasionally do freelance jobs if I can. You’re always free to email me.

I made a 7-page comic called “In Camera” for Happiness 3, edited as always by the fabulous Leah Wishnia and up for preorder here.

It should also be debuting at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival on November 10th - you can grab it at the Collective Stench table, #D12.

This is a massive double issue (180+ pages!) with an insane number of talented artists, including some of my favorites like Zejian Shen, Niv Bavarsky, Renata Gąsiorowska, Inés Estrada, Andy Burkholder and many more.

Oh, and Angie Wang in a bowtie is off to the right being admired by fans (also nonfiction).
